Symptom narrative

The hives were described as red raised welts, covering most of his body. No joint swelling, no swelling of his eyelids, lips, tongue, scrotum, hands or feet were noted. The hives were described as not painful, but did seem to bother him. The individual lesions lasted less than 24 hours, and when they resolved, there was no residual bruise or mark that was left over. He was initially treated with Benadryl, but this was felt to be giving him side effects, so this was switched to Zyrtec 2.5mg daily.

Current illness

This was also about 2-3 weeks after a febrile respiratory illness that required an emergency room visit. The fever abated after a few days but the hives persisted for approximately 3 weeks, and then subsided.

Medical history

He also seems to have chronic congestion, which seems to be related to URIs sustained at daycare. He seems to have an almost constant yellow runny nose, and has recently been treated for ear infection. He does seem to breathe hard at night with occasional snoring. He has no history of lower respiratory tract symptoms such as asthma, bronchitis, or pneumonia.

Other medications

After vaccination, to treat the reaction, he was initially treated with Benadryl, but this was felt to be giving him side effects, so this was switched to Zyrtec 2.5mg daily.

Allergies

He has no known food or medication allergies.
