Syncope

Symptom narrative

After receiving the third vaccination, the patient began to faint while sitting on the exam table. The father and mother assisted me with getting the patient in supine position, the father immediately elevated the patient's lower extremities. As I was assessing the patient's level of consciousness, additional clinic staff returned to assist with the patient's recovery. Blood pressure was within normal range, a bottle of water was provided, and sweet candy was given to the patient to eat. Advised the parents that a vasovagal syncope is common for children getting vaccinations at this age. Patient reported feeling nauseated and displayed diaphoresis above the upper lip area. Patient laid supine for five plus minutes then stayed in a seated position on the exam table. During this time the parents made the decision to not proceed with the remaining three vaccinations. Education was provided about waiting 28 days before receiving the varicella live vaccine. Prior to leaving the clinic the patient stated that he was "ok". Advised to continue with drinking water and can take Tylenol if discomfort is felt.
