Systemic and local reaction to vaccine She experienced a systemic and local reaction to a recently administered vaccine, characterized by soreness at the injection site, significant swelling, redness, warmth, joint pain, chills, sweats, and a low-grade headache. The reaction is more severe than typical vaccine reactions. Differential diagnosis includes cellulitis, but suspicion is low due to lack of spreading redness and systemic infection signs. The reaction is expected to resolve within 72 hours, with the worst symptoms in the past 24 hours. - Mark the area of swelling with a skin marker to monitor for changes in size. - Use acetaminophen for pain management. - Apply cool packs to reduce swelling. - Take ibuprofen to help with inflammation and swelling. - Monitor the marked area for any increase in size or spreading redness. - Contact the office if symptoms worsen or if there is an increase in redness, swelling, or pain. - Encourage rest and avoidance of strenuous activities until symptoms improve.
