Symptom narrative

suspected acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP); This literature-non-study case was reported in a literature article and describes the occurrence of GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME (suspected acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP)) in a 53-year-old male patient who received mRNA-1273 (Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine) for COVID-19 vaccination. LITERATURE REFERENCE: Previously administered products included for COVID-19 vaccination: COVID-19 vaccine (Dose 1). Past adverse reactions to the above products included No adverse effect with COVID-19 vaccine. On an unknown date, the patient received second dose of mRNA-1273 (Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine) (unknown route) 1 dosage form. On an unknown date, after starting mRNA-1273 (Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine), the patient experienced GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME (suspected acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP)) (seriousness criterion medically significant). The patient was treated with Immunoglobulins nos (Immunoglobulin i.v) (intravenous use) at an unspecified dose and frequency. At the time of the report, GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME (suspected acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP)) was resolving. DIAGNOSTIC RESULTS (normal ranges are provided in parenthesis if available): On an unknown date, CSF test: Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed mild albuminocytologic dissociation. On an unknown date, Electromyogram: performed 8 days after presentation showed evidence of polyneuropathy with features of acquired demyelination. On an unknown date, Nerve conduction studies: performed 8 days after presentation showed evidence of polyneuropathy with features of acquired demyelination. On an unknown date, Physical examination: Examination revealed mild, diffuse weakness and areflexia with hyperesthesia to pinprick in the lower extremities. For mRNA-1273 (Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine) (Unknown), the reporter did not provide any causality assessments. Concomitant medications were not reported. The objective is to present a case of suspected acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP), the most common subtype of GBS, that occurred following the second dose of the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine. As of 26-Feb-2021, 34 cases of GBS had been reported to the CDC following COVID-19 vaccination. This case presented with a band-like sensation over the trunk, ataxia, paresthesias, and diffuse weakness 3 days after receiving the second dose of Moderna COVID 19 Vaccine. The patient improved with IVIg and plasma exchange. Author concluded that link between GBS and COVID-19 vaccination had yet to be proven. Including this patient, only a small number of cases of GBS had been reported following Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, and Johnson & Johnsons COVID-19 vaccines. Given the substantial morbidity and mortality associated with COVID-19 infection, forgoing vaccination in healthy individuals due to concern for adverse neurological events was not justified. Most recent FOLLOW-UP information incorporated above includes: On 16-Jan-2026: Live follow-up received on 20-Jan-2026 has FTA which contains no new information.; Reporter's Comments: The benefit-risk relationship of product is not affected by this report.
