During the patient's physical, the provider, ordered a flu shot and an HPV vaccine to be administered. When preparing to give the vaccines, the patient requested the use of a shot blocker. We discussed that the HPV vaccine would be administered in the left deltoid and the flu shot in the right deltoid. While administering the HPV vaccine, the patient's mom played a video for distraction, and I successfully administered the HPV into the patient's left deltoid while using the shot blocker. When I prepared to give the flu vaccine in patient's right deltoid, he began to cry and pleaded with his mom not to have the flu shot. After the mom tried to convince patient to proceed with the flu shot, she decided not to go through with it. I then informed the mom that the HPV vaccine can make patients feel woozy, so we ask them to wait 5-10 minutes to ensure they are okay. I inquired if the patient had eaten, and they confirmed he had lunch. The mom then asked if the patient could have an ice pack for his arm. I left the patient and mom in the room to get the ice pack, but upon my return, I found that they had gone to the waiting room. When I handed the patient the ice pack, I asked if he felt okay; he said yes and thanked me for the ice pack. About 5 minutes after returning to the office side of the building, a coworker informed me that my patient was outside vomiting into a trash can. I went to his location, had him sit down where RN joined me and help assess him. Mom had given patient a cup of water to sip on, while we asked her for more information, and she mentioned that the patient had lunch at school around 10:30/11:00 am and had taken Clonidine an hour before his appointment (without food) due to anxiety about the appointment. The mom stated that the patient had only thrown up once and then offered patient an oatmeal bar to help get some food in his system. Patient accepted the oatmeal bar and began to eat. When patient had eaten about half of the bar and felt a bit better we assisted patient back into the waiting room where I then manually retook patient's blood pressure, which was 108/64. Dr. then came out to talk to patient. patient was feeling better, and the mom was informed that we would call the following day to check in. On 02/12/2026 I called mom to check in on patient and how he was doing after the HPV adverse reaction. Mom stated that he was fine. They had left Peds and went to get him food. Mom mentioned that he ate and started to perk back up. She also said that he did not throw up again and was feeling better.
