Symptom narrative

Child developed fever up to 104 F and had febrile seizure lasting 12-14 minutes on 2/5/26 (2 days later).

Current illness

Child with right otitis media (ear infection) and recent fever about 6 days prior that had resolved. Child started on cefdinir antibiotic at time of vaccination to treat right otitis media.

Lab data

Child was evaluated at the ER and admitted to the hospital due to length of seizure and concurrent antibiotic use due to ear infection. Underwent screening labs (CBC, CRP, blood culture, urine culture, CSF culture). Cultures all negative. WBC initially elevated to 15 but later decreased to 3 during hospital stay. Head CT done and was negative for intracranial hemorrhage, mass effect and hydrocephalus. Child was hospitalized for 12 days and received IV Vancomycin while hospitalized due to concern for invalid negative cultures since child already on antibiotics on day of culture collection. Exam confirmed ongoing ear infection. Rapid viral testing (rapid RSV, rapid Flu and full respiratory panel) all negative. CSF viral PCR panel also negative.
