CMA 1 administered TDAP vaccine to the patient after asking all screening questions. The only question answered yes to was allergies. The patient has a known allergy to penicillin but no other medications or foods. He had received TDAP vaccine in 2010 and did not report any adverse effects. After scanning medication in the chart and prepping the area, I administered the vaccine. The patient immediately went silent and his head dropped to his chest. I called out his name and he did not respond. I opened the door of the exam room and yelled for help. I initially thought he had fainted, so I asked a staff to grab an apple juice from the refrigerator in the lab. Both staff members were trying to find it but could not. The patient the patient was still sitting upright in the chair, head still down. I left his side to grab the apple juice as I knew where it was. Before I left the room, another CMA 2 was by his side attempting to rouse him. I grabbed the apple juice, ran back to the room but by the time I got there, CMA 2 had assisted him to the ground. As I entered the room again, I witnessed the end of a convulsion, leading me to believe he had a seizure. He continued to be unresponsive, even after the physician got to the room to assess him as well. the physician instructed I call his emergency contact, so I did, and she was able to get to the clinic less than 15 minutes later. As I was speaking with her, someone else had called 911. Emergency services showed up less than 5 minutes later and started assessing him. I relayed what I had witnessed to them, but they were insistent that he had fainted due to receiving the vaccine. I have never witnessed a seizure in real life before but after speaking with CMA 2 and the physician, it appears he most likely did have a seizure.
