Patient received the vaccine in the left arm, there was some bleeding, so tech cleaned up area and put another band-aid on her arm and patient asked if we as a facility ask them to wait 15 minutes before leaving. He responded it is recommended that patient remain for 15 minutes after a vaccine. She then asked for an ice pack, which we retrieved , and also took her some water. But she appeared well but stated she was feeling hot. She was to get a flu vaccine next, so the tech was letting her get ready for the next shot by giving her some extra time. As he continued to talk to her he noticed she looked like she was going to pass out, she leaned back and her shoulders appeared to slump over. He then called me (the pharmacist over) . When I spoke to her she seemed confused and out of touch about what was happening. I asked her if she was ok and within a few minutes she appeared to come out of it. I told her we would not administer the next vaccine due to her reaction. She sat there under our supervision for 15-20 minutes before leaving. She appeared alert and coherent when she left. I then asked her if she had a fear of needles and then she did admit, that she did. She stated she had to get these vaccines for school. She stated she has an appointment with a doctor at the university tomorrow and she was trying to see if she could get the vaccines done earlier, so she could cancel her appointment at the university.
Patient did mention after she had the adverse event that she had fear of needles. Nothing listed on the intake form. She said she was a medical student and that she had no problem giving shots, only receiving them. She stated she felt hot prior to getting dizzy.
