loss of taste; This spontaneous case was reported by a consumer and describes the occurrence of AGEUSIA (loss of taste) in a 71-year-old female patient who received mRNA-1273 BIVALENT .222 (MODERNA COVID-19 VACCINE, BIVALENT (ORIGINAL AND OMICRON BA.4/BA.5)) (batch no. AS7165B) for COVID-19 prophylaxis. Concurrent medical conditions included Hypertension. On 29-Sep-2022, the patient received dose of mRNA-1273 BIVALENT .222 (MODERNA COVID-19 VACCINE, BIVALENT (ORIGINAL AND OMICRON BA.4/BA.5)) (Intramuscular use) .5 milliliter. On an unknown date, the patient experienced AGEUSIA (loss of taste). At the time of the report, AGEUSIA (loss of taste) had not resolved. Concomitant medication use information was not provided by reporter. It was reported that the patient began losing their sense of taste just two months after receiving the vaccination, and this loss continued. The patient visited experts at a university due to the loss of taste. The experts said that it might be an autoimmune response to the vaccine. The patient stated that they were not certain but, based on this possibility, chose to stop taking further vaccines. The patient discontinued vaccination in the hope that their sense of taste would return; however, it had not returned, and four years had elapsed since the onset. The patient's last Moderna COVID-19 vaccine was received in Sep-2022, and no COVID-19 vaccines were taken after that. The patient had been consistently wearing a mask wherever the patient went outside and the patient considered to take another COVID-19 vaccine, as the patient was planning for travel in four weeks, which would include a 10-hour flight. It was unknown if the patient experienced any additional symptoms/events. Treatment medication use information was not provided by reporter.
